Datchet are Champions!

Datchet’s final league game of the season saw them travel to Fleet requiring just 5 points to be crowned Thames Valley Division 2A champions.

Datchet won the toss and elected to field. As has become the norm, Lambert made early in roads into the Fleet top order bowling some of the best overs of his season. Fleet captain Black remained resolute in defence and when Lambert’s initial spell had been safely negotiated, he began to find the boundary on what appeared to be a flat wicket.

James Lambert and Andrew Dick bowled with great determination but little reward and it was not until the re-introduction of James Dick that Datchet took giant strides towards the 5 points that they required. James finished with figures of 5-49 which included the prize wicket of Black.

Fleet were eventually dismissed for 169 and Datchet were champions!…..As it turned out Datchet need not have worried about claiming the 5 bowling points that they had collected as Eversley had been asked to field in their game against Finchampstead which meant Datchet had in fact been crowned before a ball was bowled.

All that remained then was to finish the game off in style. Things did not start well with regular opener Gallagher ‘indisposed’ it fell to Aeri and Jones to open the innings for Datchet. Aeri was dismissed early on, but his frustrations would soon pale into insignificance at the DCC after party. Gallagher now a little lighter strode to the crease and began where he had left off against Slough – dispatching the Fleet attack to all parts of the ground. Tom Jones ably supported Gallagher bludgeoning the ball over the boundary on several occasions despite him being uncertain if he required his helmet or not.

When Jones was dismissed there was no respite for Fleet as Aziz was soon depositing the ball over the line. With Datchet dominating the Fleet attack – a good game was indeed a quick game and Datchet reached the total in 24.3 overs fittingly through a boundary to Gallagher which also bought up his 100.

A good win at the end of an excellent season for Datchet and the celebrations that followed were nothing less that this group of players deserved. In particular Conor Gallagher’s contribution is worthy of note averaging well over 100 in the league for Datchet as well as being a genuinely good bloke.

A great year for the first XI who were able to say thank you to all those that had supported them with the presentation of some well deserved gifts. In particular all the players would like to thank Ian ‘The O’ Oram, Keith ‘Weasel’ Wheeler, Jim ‘The Rare One’ Alldis, Kevin Vogan, Paul ‘Chairman’ Tilley and Bob Dick for all their efforts throughout the season. Without your contributions there would be no club and we are truly grateful for all that you do.

Congratulations to Datchet CC. When I was Datchet’s first league representative and Treasurer to the 1975 League, we had high hopes for the club. More power to your collective elbows – especially at the bar!

I wish I lived nearer nowadays and was able to find the time to return to the club more often, but I loved my 30 years at Datchet and get a warm glow to see the old place prospering.

Good luck for 2013 in the top flight.
